Welcome to the New and Improved Route Fifty

As we continue to connect state and local leaders across the United States, our laboratory of ideas continues to grow.
Route Fifty’s regular readers may have noticed a few changes around our homepage and article pages. This week, we launched a redesigned home for Route Fifty’s editorial content, which will offer new ways to explore our blog posts, articles and in-depth features through a cleaner interface, on desktop and mobile devices.
When Atlantic Media’s Government Executive Media Group launched Route Fifty in April 2015, we purposefully adopted a somewhat unstructured navigational framework. The world of state and local government is vast and varied, with a wide range of issues that are important to decisionmakers and other stakeholders in state capitals, city halls and county buildings, so we didn’t want to limit ourselves too much starting out.
Naturally, our reporting gravitated toward a few core topics, which are now better organized on Route Fifty’s navigation bar: Infrastructure; Public Safety; Tech & Data; Smart Cities; Health & Human Services; and Finance.
There’s no shortage of subtopics under those larger umbrellas, so, for example, if you’re looking for stories related to firefighting, those would appear under Public Safety, along with other law enforcement and emergency response content. But the specific Firefighting subtopic page is also available through a complete topic library of content areas.
Our homepage can also spotlight important and timely subtopic areas and special features, like Economic Development.
With Route Fifty’s redesign, our team evaluated how our readers were using the site and built features that would serve their voracious hunger for information about what works and what can be adopted or adapted for their state or local government jurisdiction.
The revamped site also improves the way we feature our events, special reports and ebooks. (By the way, have you downloaded our recently released Health Data special report?)
Route Fifty covered a lot of ground in 2016 and as executive editor—I traveled to 30 different states. In 2017, we have a busy year ahead, including the next iteration of our Navigator Awards and a series of events we’ll be hosting around the nation, including Denver, Seattle and Phoenix.
