Liccardo’s city is a “platform” for partnerships that drive smart city innovation.

This is the first in a series of Route Fifty video interviews with mayors in Austin, Texas, for SXSW. Other interviews: West Sacramento Mayor Christopher Cabaldon and Denver Mayor Michael Hancock .

San José Mayor Sam Liccardo joined us—and the rest of Silicon Valley—in Austin during SXSW. We spoke with the mayor about being a good partner for companies “in growing innovation and talent.” Liccardo explained how his city is “a laboratory for those companies around us that want to demonstrate everything they’re doing from IoT infrastructure to new ways of connecting folks with broadband.”

Liccardo also talked with Route Fifty about how the San José team is taking on challenges like affordability, its rapid growth, and “how we retrofit a city that was really largely built for cars into a city that’s built for people.”
