The state of Mississippi has rolled out a handful of new digital tools to improve citizen experience, including an artificial conversational chatbot and an Amazon Alexa Digital Voice assistant.

“Citizens’ expectations of digital platforms continue to evolve,” Craig Orgeron, the executive director of the Mississippi Department of Information Technology Services, said in a statement. “Mississippi has responded to those growing needs by thinking outside the browser and bringing successful private sector technologies to government. Technologies like machine learning and virtual reality.”

Missi, as the chatbot is called, supports more than 100 inquiries including: “How do I renew my hunting license?” “Where can I purchase a driver’s license?” and “I need help with my taxes.”

Ask Mississippi, Mississippi’s integration with Alexa Voice Services provides users of the state’s MyMS with renewal reminders, popular data from ms.gov, state facts, and other information.

MDITS has also rolled out a special tour of the State Capitol in Jackson using virtual reality headset, desktop computer or mobile device.

The state’s website and other digital tools were built by Mississippi Interactive, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Olathe, Kansas-based NIC, and has been contracted to improve online services for state agencies, boards and commissions.
