E-government service provider NIC has several more state apps planned for the next few weeks.

Arkansas has developed the Apple Watch’s first official government app.

Described by Olathe, Kansas-based e-government service provider NIC as a “citizen’s personal digital government assistant,” Gov2Go reminds users of various government deadlines in a personalized calendar and was originally designed as a mobile app for Apple and Android devices.

The app is the first of several state government apps coming in the next few weeks from the Arkansas Information Consortium and other NIC subsidiaries in Mississippi, Maryland and Texas.

“Since the founding of our company, our single mission has been to harness the power of the latest technology to make government more accessible for everyone,” Robert Knapp, NIC’s chief operating officer, said in a statement.

“We developed an election results application when Palm Pilot devices were the latest technology around 2000, then we followed a few years later with the first official government apps for the iPhone and iPad, and now we are innovating to see how new wearable technology can provide efficiencies in government interactions.”

Alerts for property tax payment and vehicle registration renewals are a few of the app features that can be set up after users answer some questions about where they live and the vehicles they drive. The app also includes a police “wanted” list and tells users when sunset is.

Users can submit text-based questions 24 hours a day to get answers about a particular locality’s elected officials and polling places—all in an effort to better improve citizen engagement with government through technology.
